Tam Glad feature: A conversation with Kevin Mirksy aka Single Fin Theory

Stoked by the impending surf session, there wasn’t a moment to waste as these epic waves lasted only so long and this may be the last day for weeks for such a session. He couldn’t get his wetsuit on fast enough. 

54 years of inspiring surf and the natural wonder of Marin County, Kevin Mirsky grew up in a place where the neighborhoods look nothing alike and mountains dominate the minimally developed landscape, Marin provides the backdrop and breeding ground for artists, musicians, creators, and seekers. For one individual the call to create was intoxicating.

Growing up in Mill Valley just beyond Tam Junction, he always had an eye for creativity and with a wandering mind, his drawing began. But as life moved on this endeavor was always present but never dominant. Years later with a wonderful marriage to another local and 3 kids, he was thrust back into a mindset that was grounded in his childhood. Drawing is and always will be a part of his soul.

His drawings and prints of playful images provoke deep thoughts. In a world where instant gratification and social media dominate our eyeballs and head space, Kevin’s work is a calming and peaceful place to reflect on very simple intentional pieces of work. With inspiration from Marin County, his work is a constant reminder of the magical place we live and the ever feeling of stoke which permeates the landscape. As a native of San Diego, his work resonates with me as it takes me back to a time when the surf and sun inspired my daily life. Today, I feel immense gratitude for “the county” but Kevin’s work has a way of bringing home the message. 

After perusing through his portfolio of work, one can’t help but notice the influence his home of Marin has had on each piece. A surfboard, coffee, coast, and a skater are just some of the examples of imagery found in his work. But, I'd advise you to take a moment and observe; take with you what you think his message is. For everyone there will be something different as with all works of art. 

His success in art has spanned gallery shows at places like Proof Lab right here in Tam Junction (unfortunately that show has ended as I was told all pieces were purchased). In addition his pieces of work are on permanent display at the new Seabird Hotel in Oceanside, CA and also has an upcoming show in Montauk, New York this summer. He also has completed brand collaborations where his art adorns specific product packaging and an upcoming collaboration with OCN Culture Wetsuits. 

Ultimately Kevin’s work is highly relatable. Lessons in life, social commentary, and fun are all themes I took from reviewing his work. But his work wouldn’t be solely why I’m writing this. Kevin is as genuine as they come. Agreeing to meet me at Hook Fish Co in Tam Junction, Kevin spoke about his work but also his upbringing, family, and life’s challenges. I couldn’t help but notice how comfortable he is speaking about himself. Some may be hesitant to speak on such things to a complete stranger but his words flowed and I was grateful for the time. 

A day in Marin County is probably something we should all be grateful for. As we conversed over a poke and beer, I couldn’t help but appreciate Kevin’s humble and optimistics attitude towards this incredible place.
